What is Insulation

Insulation

  • Insulation is any material that is used to block thermal heat flow.
  • Insulation should also block air movement or work correctly  with a product that does.  We call these products air barriers.
  • Incorrectly installed insulation or air barriers can be the cause of a variety of issues including: unwanted drafts, moisture, rotting, mold and of course energy inefficiency.
  •  There are many insulating products that do an excellent job of accomplishing the goal of insulating.  Some products provide insulation and an air barrier in the same install.
  • Most insulation products have an appropriate use and correct application. Important factors to remember:
    • Where is the type of insulation being installed?
    • How is the insulation being installed?
    • And most important of all: Does the insulator himself have an adequate understanding of building science principals to install the product correctly?
